Advanced Data Protection (ADP) is an optional Apple security setting that expands end-to-end encryption to more iCloud data, including iCloud Backup, iCloud Drive, Photos, and Notes. Apple already protects some data with end-to-end encryption by default, such as iCloud Keychain, Messages in iCloud, FaceTime, and Health. But other data, including iCloud Mail, Contacts, and Calendars, is never end-to-end encrypted.

Because ADP is turned off by default, your iCloud files, photos, notes, and backups aren’t protected with Apple’s strongest encryption unless you enable it.
